How to connect to your higher self

How often do you feel conflicted about some of the decisions you need to make in your life – where to work, where to live or even simple ones such as where to go for dinner? I’ll bet oftentimes when making plans, you push off the decision making to someone else. Do you find yourself at a loss, afraid of making the wrong decision? Have you ever made a decision based on what your friends or coworkers are doing, then find yourself wishing you did the opposite?

When we’re filled with self-doubt, we tend to look for answers on the outside, trusting everything except ourselves, when the truth is within us all along. The truth can be found by connecting to an energy beyond which you may normally feel comfortable. Some call it God energy, the universe, the divine, guides or whatever rocks your boat. They are all connected to insight, a connection you have within yourself.

A higher self is the part of you that exists in your subconscious mind. It’s the part of you that knows what path to take. It’s the part of you that has been stifled with cotton balls and tape – the part you’ve taught to ex-communicate. But believe it or not, this higher self loves, accepts and believes in you – it always did; you just didn’t know how to trust it. Connecting to your higher self will give you the strength you need to grow into the person you are meant to be. Here are some tips on how to connect:

1. Go to a quiet, space.

A place where you can be alone with your thoughts. Solitude gives us the space we need to find the answers we seek, away from distractions and outside influences.

2. Ask for guidance.

Don’t overthink it. Take a few deep breaths, close your eyes and ask whatever comes into your mind. Let the questions come forth one at a time.

3. Listen, really listen.

Let go of doubt and fear. In order to hear, you have to be able to receive, to accept that you’re deserving – that you’re worth it. This is where most of us get in our own way. When you ask a question, hear the answer; trust it instead of talking yourself out of it.

It’s so easy to talk ourselves out of what our hearts are telling us is right. I do it all the time. My ego may say it’s simply a coincidence; it’s only a fortune cookie or a shooting star, and it’s not until I listen to my higher self that I realize it represents something bigger. When I really listen to that inner voice, I become filled with a feeling of calm and inner peace, and I know what I’m hearing is the truth.

Try these three simple steps each day, and you will become more attuned to what’s happening in your mind and in your heart.

In the wise words of Deepak Chopra, “Follow the cosmic wisdom which is ever seeking to guide you. You are never alone, nor do you walk alone. Bringing your will in line with the higher will allows you to move with grace and peace through each and every day.”
