Corporate “wellness” has transformed to “well-being”

It’s no secret that having healthy, happy employees leads to greater productivity, creativity and ultimately, improved business results. That’s why employer wellness programs have become increasingly popular in recent years. Employers have realized the importance of investing in their employees’ personal and professional development.

In 2017, most large United States companies have a corporate wellness program in their organizations. In fact, a survey in 2015 by Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that 70 percent of employers reported having a wellness program, an increase from 58 percent in 2008.

Corporate wellness programs are a nearly $8 billion industry in the US and are expected to grow nearly 7.8 percent through 2021. The Global Wellness Institute puts that number at $40 billion worldwide.

This is good news, and it seems that corporations have gotten the message that healthy employees make better businesses. In addition, a good employee wellness program can help to lower their insurance costs, increase employee productivity, and attract and retain good talent.

For those who need to see the cold hard ROI numbers to measure the value in wellness, there’s a study from RAND Corporation: for every $1 that’s invested in overall wellness, you can expect a return of $1.50 on your investment.

What’s changing?

We all know how a corporate program based on mindfulness and health initiatives have become ingrained in corporate wellness programs over the last few years. However, starting in 2016, there has been a shift from wellness to a more holistic well-being approach that addresses a multitude of employee needs.

#1-Wellness in body

  • Nutrition
  • Fitness
  • “Well-being hubs” where technology is a big focus with wellness portals & wearables as part of this new trend

#2-Wellness in life

  • Financial
  • Parenting and childcare
  • On-going education and e-learning

#3-Wellness in mind

  • Emotional well-being and family support
  • Sleep
  • Stress reduction programs
  • Mindfulness and focus improvement

By adopting a holistic approach and shifting from wellness to well-being, it’s possible for companies to create accommodating programs that meet diverse employee needs.
