No relationship is perfect. We all experience ups and downs, and have days where we feel frustrated, unloved or unsupported by our partners. It’s how well we face these challenges that determines the happiness and success of our relationships.

While it’s in your best interest to walk away from an unhealthy relationship, if the issues aren’t deal breakers and you’re committed to making the relationship work, here are a few simple ways to keep your love on track:

Show appreciation

Even in small, everyday ways, like making coffee in the morning just the way he or she likes it. Or expressing thanks for something your partner has done. Its important not to take each other for granted, and to express your gratitude and appreciation when your partner does something thoughtful or caring. Love is in the details.

Communicate with compassion

If you feel like you are constantly arguing with your significant other, take a step back and try to look at the situation from their perspective. The next time you discuss the issue, start by stating that your goal is to resolve the conflict. This shows that you are putting the relationship ahead of your own ego, and your partner will be more open to listen and work with you to fix what’s wrong.

Make time for fun

It’s normal to get swept up in the craziness of our everyday lives, but it’s so important to remember to make your relationship a priority. Friendship is the foundation of love so schedule time to do things you both enjoy—whether it’s going out to eat at your favorite restaurant, hiking, or planning a trip—to keep the romance alive.

How do you show your partner you care? Are there any you’d like to add to this list?

Showing appreciation is a big one. Even something as simple as sending my boyfriend a midday “I love you” text makes a big difference.
