When it comes to natural remedies and holistic health, essential oils are one of my personal favorites. Nothing relaxes me like the scent of lavender when I walk into the house, and spraying refreshing lemon citrus in the office always clears my head.

As someone who is passionate about exploring the roots of wellbeing, I have always found aromatherapy and essential oils to be fascinating. There are many interesting ancient beliefs surrounding these oils. Some say they are the “spirits” of the plants, trees and flowers. Known as the original medicine of our ancestors, they are believed to have spiritual, emotional, mental and physical benefits.

Science supports these beliefs. According to the National Institutes of Health, the plant oils send chemical messages to the brain when inhaled or applied to the skin and absorbed into the body.

This, in turn, can influence our emotions and moods, and also have physiological effects.

There are a variety of essential oils, each known for their different healing capabilities. For example, if you’re suffering from skin issues, tea tree oil shows some evidence of effectiveness in the treatment for acne. To relieve congestion, aromatherapists recommend inhaling eucalyptus vapor. And Peppermint is often recommended to clear the senses and stimulate alertness.

Dr Wolfgang Stefiltsch, vice president of the Austrian Association of Aromatherapy and Aroma Care, says: “There is some high-quality evidence that essential oils are effective in treating viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections, and in providing relief from sleep difficulties and pain. The oils may also improve moods, such as anxiety, depression, and reduce stress.”

I’ve heard a lot of talk lately about essential oils but I really didn’t know how beneficial they were. I might have to start using essential oils now!
