Many of us have a love/hate relationship with technology. There’s no denying that our smartphones and electronic devices make our lives easier, but are they making us happier? Sometimes we view technology as a source of stress, but like anything in life, it’s about finding a healthy balance.

Personally, I allow technology to improve my life, while also being mindful of when I need to unplug. Developing a healthier relationship with technology only involves making a few small changes in your daily routine. Here are some tips that I find helpful:

1. Unplug

How many times per day do you check your smartphone? Truthfully, I don’t think it’s possible to keep track. During work hours, I am always plugged in, but in the morning and evening, I take a break to recharge my batteries. I don’t check my emails or phone unless it’s an emergency. Instead, I spend time with my family and, in the evening, catch up with them to talk about their day. The key is create offline time for family, friends and self.

2. Meditate

Working for an online company, it’s not realistic for me to put my phone away during the day. But if I feel myself getting overwhelmed when I’m on-the-go, I listen to 5-10 minutes of calming music and guided meditation to bring me back to center. One app I particularly love is Headspace, a guided meditation of 10 courses over 10 days.

3. Stay active

As hectic as my schedule can be, I always make time to work out. If you can’t get to the gym, there are many apps for exercise. I use the Well Workouts app, and there are many other great options for fitness on-the-go.

But there is no app or social media site that can ever replace the real thing—spending time with friends and family. Plus, when I’m spending quality time with the people I love, I want to give them my undivided attention.

Are there any tips you’d like to add to the list? We’d love to hear them.
