Betsy Chasse
Betsy Chasse

Those of you who aren’t familiar with Betsy Chasse are in for a treat. I had a chance to speak with her recently, and she was just as funny and freewheeling as I expected. Where do I start with this dynamic woman who’s gone from child actress to gourmet dog-treat entrepreneur to filmmaker to seeker, finder, and author?!

Let’s start with her connection to Dr. Joe Dispenza, my favorite change expert. Back before he was better known, she studied with him. He appears in the cult hit movie What the Bleep Do We Know!?, on which she was a writer, producer, and director. It’s a wildly innovative film about quantum physics, about how our reality is only what we perceive it to be. Through a mixture of animation and documentary, the film shines a light on the fascinating place where spirituality meets science. (For fans, a follow-up is in the works!)

I loved her new book, Tipping Sacred CowsThe Uplifting Story of Spilt Milk and Finding Your Own Spiritual Path in a Hectic World (Atria/Simon & Schuster). Betsy talks about our “sacred cows” getting in the way of living the life we truly want. Like most of us, she grew up thinking she had certain expectations she had to meet. At different points along the way, we get a better understanding of ourselves and our lives. Necessary changes can then bring us into our own. “It’s all going be okay,” she writes; “just do the work.”

In this wise and funny memoir about change, she writes about how important it is to have these transformative moments when everything in life might be falling apart, but we know we’ll be able to put it back together. “I think our entire lives are epiphanies,” she told me. “In different moments, we have moments of clarity.”

I can definitely relate to understanding how at different points along the way, we get a better understanding of ourselves and our lives.
