When I asked Joel Harper the main reason why 75% of New Year’s resolutions fail, he said it’s because when people don’t meet their resolution in two weeks, they give up. People need to look at the categories in their life and think about what’s tangible—something they can do day in and day out.

The problem is that many people decide to make a change just because it’s New Years, rather than doing it because they believe they deserve to be in amazing shape, have more friends, a great love life, and so on.

Joel encourages his clients to sit back and come up with a plan. If you want to get fit and you have a long way to go, you need to take action on a day-to-day basis—not just on the days you see your trainer. Set aside time, even if it’s only 10 minutes, when you wake up and work out.

“[Getting in shape] is like brushing your teeth. You don’t brush your teeth only on Saturdays, right? You do it every single day. Flossing is like stretching and brushing is like exercise.”

Start to look at New Years as every day. Keep that motivated mentality all year round.

Joel also points out the key to healthy long term weight loss is consistency—drinking water, a healthy diet and being mindful. Stop living on autopilot. For example, if you eat a donut with your coffee every day before work, switch that to a piece of fruit. Implementing healthy lifestyle changes every day is what will help you get in shape and more importantly, stay in shape.
